Abstract
PURPOSE: Aqueous solution polymerization is conducted using a facility having airtight flat spaces that is formed with upright type cooling plates with coolant paths built in as the polymerization chamber to produce the titled polymer suitably used as a high polymer flocculant, paper-strengthening agent or thickner with industrial advantage.
CONSTITUTION: Upright type cooling plates 1-A that is made of a metal of high hea conductivity such as stainless steel as the base material and has coolant paths 1 built in and frame plates 1-B are alternately piled through packings 5 to form plural combinations of plates 1C, or a pluraity of upright cooling plates 2-A integrated with frame plate are made into the combined plate 2-C to provide upright flat air-tight spaces between cooling plates as the polymerization chambers 3. As flexible tube 2 is used to circulate the coolant, an aqueous solution of water-soluble monomer or their mixture such as acrylamide, acrylic acid, its salt or styerenesulfonic acid or its salt is introduced through inlet 9 into only the end cooling plates or through other inlets 8 into the inner side cooling plates to effect the aqueous solution polymerization.
