Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce in high productivity titled low MW polymer having a narrow MW distribution and less discoloration, by polymerizing acrylate salt type monomers and NaHSO3 in an aqueous reaction medium, while introducing fine bubbles of air into the solution.
CONSTITUTION: An acrylate salt type low MW polymer, MW 500W100,000, is prepared by continuously feeding to an aqueous reaction medium, (A) an acrylate salt type monomer comprising (a) 50W100mol% of an alkali metal acrylate, (b) 0W 50mol% of acrylamide and/or 2-hydroxyethyl (meth)acrylate and (c) 0W30mol% of a copolymerizable hydrophilic monomer and (B) 0.008W0.4mol/mol of (A), of NaHSO3 and at the same time introducing at least 10l (normal state) of air in a form of fine bubbles, diameter ≤1,000μ, and in the meantime, the mixture is polymerized at 5W80°C in the aqueous solution.
