Abstract

Solution polymers of alpha , beta -ethylenically unsaturated esters carrying hydroxyl groups with other copolymerisable monomers and a balanced ratio of primary and secondary hydroxyl groups, namely a hydroxyl number quotient OHN primary DIVIDED OHN secondary of between 1 and 2 and a total hydroxyl number of between 60 and 200 mg of KOH/g are prepared. Hydroxyl groups may additionally be introduced, within the stated hydroxyl number quotient range, by reacting carboxyl groups which may be present with monoepoxides. During curing in the production of coatings, the products exhibit uniform and shrinkage-free full cure due to the balanced course of curing, and give films having excellent mechanical and chemical resistance. Due to their insensitivity to low temperatures and vibration, they are particularly suitable for painting winter-sports equipment.
