Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the stainless steel being cheap and having excellent strength, toughness, anticorrosion and durability, by heating only a superficial layer to transform it into the form of α iron.
CONSTITUTION: About 100μ of the superficial layer of a material to be treated is transformed into the form of α iron by heating only the superficial layer of the material by e.g. a high frequency heating method. With a type of steel that requires a relatively long heating time for transforming into the form of α iron or a piece of steel having such a special shape that the heating of only the superficial layer is not applicable, the superficial layer of the material to be treated is given a work strain by shot peening or roll hammering in advance. Subsequently, the heating of only the superficial layer is carried out in a short time or the material to be treated is wholly heated and the heating is finished at the time when the superficial layer is transformed into the form of α iron.
