Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve a fatigue strength of a connecting rod, by partially tempering a coined end part and a near end part of a communicating stem of a connecting rod after coined.
CONSTITUTION: A steel piece is forged to form a connecting rod material A0. The forged material is then quenched, tempered and further with a coil rolled. The periphery of a coined end part 3a of the material A0 is surrounded with a coil 7, and heated by a high-frequency energ. Thus, the end part is partially tempered. The partial tempering may be done also by flame heating or the like. The partially tempered part is surface hardened by shot peening. Consequently, there is no stretched residual stress at the coined end part 39 of the communicating stem 3, and a uniform compression residual stress is generated over the whole surface.
