Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an optically active malic acid useful as a food additive, drug, etc., by optically resolving DL-malic acid using an optically active d- or l-α-phenyl- β-(p-tolyl)ethylamine as a resolving agent.
CONSTITUTION: L-malic acid is prepared by reacting DL-malic acid with an optically active d-α-phenyl-β-(p-tolyl)ethylamine, or D-malic acid is prepared by reacting DL-malic acid with an optically active l-α-phenyl-β-(p-tolyl)-ethylamine. In detail, 1 mole of DL-malic acid is reacted with 1W1.8mol of optically active α-phenyl-β- (p-tolyl)ethylamine in an organic solvent to form a diastereo-isomer salt, which is slowly cooled in the presence of a seed crystal to obtain one of the diastereo-isomers of the optical active compound corresponding to the kind of the seed crystal.
EFFECT: The resolving agent can be recovered in high yield.
