Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover and reutilize separated dimethyl sulfoxide as a solvent for cellulose, by treating a solution, containing the dimethyl sulfoxide, and used as the solvent for the cellulose with an alkali, and distilling the treated solution.
CONSTITUTION: A solution, containing dimethyl sulfoxide, and used as a solvent for cellulose, e.g. a filtrate prepared by dissolving the cellulose in a mixture of dimethyl sulfoxide with paraformaldehyde, precipitating with an alcohol, etc., and filtering off the precipitate, is treated with an alkali, e.g. NaOH, and the resultant treated solution is then distilled to recover the dimethyl sulfoxide. The resultant recovered dimethyl sulfoxide is reutilizable because an acidic substance, e.g. a carboxylic acid, present in the mixture solution of as the solvent for cellulose is inactivated and the strong interaction between the diemethyl sulfoxide and the paraformaldehyde is destroyed without reducing the reactivity of the paraformaldehyde and preventing the dissolution of the cellulose.
