Abstract
PURPOSE: To make best use of the advantages of both of a carbon fiber reinforced metal and a metallic member, make up their drawbacks and provide superior characteristics under high joint strength by joining both materials directly by diffusion welding.
CONSTITUTION: A metal clad carbon fiber sheet and a metallic member are laminated, and these are heated and pressurized in a vacuum or an inert gas (such as argon) or a reducing gas (such as hydrogen) in a temp. range above the m.p. of the cladding metal and below the m.p. of the metallic member, whereby the direct diffusion welding of carbon fiber reinforced metal (CFRM) and the metallic member is caused while the CFRM is molded. Although the volumetic ratio that the CFRM2 or the metallic member 1 occupies in the entire part can be determined as desired, these are often used by taking the form of containing one of these materials essentially in volume and reinforcing this with the other depending upon purposes.
