Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a porous carbon composed of glassy carbon and containing interconnected pores, by impregnating a porous polyvinyl acetal resin containing inorganic materials with a resin which can be converted to glassy carbon by thermal decomposition, and calcining the composite in a non-oxidizing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Polyvinyl alcohol (degree of polymerization; about 1,000W5,000, degree of saponification; ≥ about 70%), an inorganic material or a carbonizable organic material (e.g. graphite powder, cellulose powder, etc.), a pore-forming material (e.g. wheat strach), a crosslinking agent, and a catalyst are dissolved or dispersed in water, and the mixtue is cured in a mold by heating. The cured product is washed with water to obtain porous polyvinyl acetal resin. The porous resin is impregnated with about 25W90wt% of a resin which can be converted to glassy carbon by thermal decomposition (e.g. resol resin, furan resin, etc.), cured, and carbonized by calcining at ≥ about 800°C in a non-oxidizing atmosphere.
