Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain porous carbon having a sharp pore size distribution and a high open cell ratio, by impregnating a resin which can be converted to amorphous carbon by thermal decomposition in a porous polyvinyl acetal resin, and calcining in a nonoxidizing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: A resin which can be converted to amorphous carbon by thermal decomposition and is selected from a phenolic resin, a furan resin and a resin composed mainly thereof, is impregnated in a porous polyvinyl acetal resin having open cell structure, selected from polyvinyl formal resin and polyvinyl benzal resin, cured, and calcined at ≥800°C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. The amount of the resin impregnated in the porous resin is 25W90wt% of the total weight of the product after impregnation.
