Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a homogeneous carbon material having superior gas impermeability by curing a soln. of phenol-formaldehyde resin having a specified average mol.wt. and a specified viscosity and by carbonizing the cured resin. CONSTITUTION:Phenol-formaldehyde resin having 270-280 average mol.wt. and 110-250cps viscosity at 25 deg.C is dissolved in a solvent such as methanol and the resulting soln. is poured into a metal mold and cured. The cured resin is carbonized by holding at >=800 deg.C in an inert atmosphere of N2, etc., to obtain a carbon material having high apparent density, satisfactory electric specific resistance and low gas permeability.
