Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve recording of a picture is superior quality by detecting the surface potential of a charge pattern formed in the no-picture formation area of a charge holding means and by controlling a voltage applied to the control electrode of an ion flow modulating electrode on the basis of the detection output. CONSTITUTION:A charge holder 3a consists of a picture formation part A and a no- picture formation part B, and a surface electrometer 4 detects the potential of a potential pattern formed in the no-picture formation part B provided close to the charge holder 3a. A control circuit 7 consists of a sample holding circuit 7a which samples and holds the output of a potential detection part 4a, an integral network 7b which integrates the output of the circuit 7a, a comparing circuit which compares the output of the circuit 7b with a reference voltage VR, and an amplifying circuit 7d which amplifies the comparison output. Thus, a voltage applied to an ion flow modulating electrode is controlled according to the surface potential to achieve recording of superior picture quality.
