Abstract

1. A method of controlling the voltage applied to an electrostatic precipitator comprising repeatedly sampling the flashover limit, wherein the voltage applied is increased from an initial value until a flashover is initiated and the flashover voltage is measured and used to define a new initial voltage that is below the flashover limit, characterized in that the light generated by the flashovers is optically detected and this detection is utilized to measure the flashover voltage.
