Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a unicellular alga with high contents of coloring matters, proteins, lipids, etc. efficiently, by cultivating a unicellular alga in a culture medium containing a carbon source and an inorganic salt primarily, and cultivating the alga in a culture medium containing an inorganic salt and no carbon source secondarily.
CONSTITUTION: The first cultivation is carried out in a culture medium containing a carbon source and an inorganic salt in the dark under aerobic conditions. The second cultivation is then carried out in a culture medium containing an inorganic salt and no carbon source in the dark under aerobic conditions. The salt concentration in the second cultivation may be low, and the first culture fluid may be diluted and directly used as the culture medium in the second cultivation. The second cultivation carried out for 6W12hr increases the crude proteinic content to 30W60%, and the contents of vitamins and physiological substances to about twice and further the chlorophyllous content to 0.8W3%. The third cultivation may carried out if necessary under the irradiation with the sunlight.
