Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction between dicyandiamide, carbon disulfide and a primary amine is conducted in a solvent to produce the titled compound important to be used as synthetic intermediat of medicines and agricultural chemicals and as a nitration inhibitor for chemical fertilizers.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between dicyandiamide, carbon disulfide and a primary amine, preferably bearing an alkyl group of 1W6 carbon atoms, is conducted at a molar ratio of 1:1:2 at 60W100°C in water, methanol, ethanol or their mixture to form guanylthiourea and an equimolar amount of sym-di-substituted thiourea. When an aqueous solvent is used, the use of a primary amine of 3W5 carbon atoms, especially butylamine is convenient, because the sym-di-substituted thiourea formed as a by-product readily separates from the objective product.
