Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound for an intermediate of agricultural chemicals and medicines, by the reaction of a compound such as 4-hydroxy-4-methyl- 5-alkyl-2-cyclopentenone in water or a mixed solvent of water with an insoluble organic solvent in the presence of hydrochloric or nitric acid.
CONSTITUTION: A cyclopentenolone of formula II (e.g. 2-allyl-3-methyl-4-hydroxy-2- cyclopentenone) is obtained easily and in high yield by the rection of a compound of formula I (R is 1-5C alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl) in water or a mixed sovlent of water with an inert organic solvent (suitably tetrahydrofuran or dioxane) in the presence of hydrochloric or nitric acid. The concentration of the hydrochloric acid used in suitably in the range of 0.2W3 normal and the molar amount is in the range of 0.4W16 times that of the compound of formula I.
USE: An alcohol constituent in Allethrin which is a useful agricultural chemical (R=allyl).
