Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an electrooptic material of superior molding workability which is optically uniform and has not double refractivity per se by using aromatic nitro compounds of relatively small mol. wts. and a solid solution dispersed uniformly in a high polymer material having compatibility with this. CONSTITUTION:Nitrobenzene, nitronaphthalene, and particularly aromatic nitro compounds having electron donative groups (alkyl, NH2, OH, CN, etc.) which have NO2 groups, are large in polarity and are of relatively low mol. wts. as well as a high polymer material which is compatible to said aromatic nitro compounds, such as polymethyl methacrylate, are dissolved in a solvent at 10:90-20:80 weight ratios and this is cast on ''NESA '' glass 5 and the solvent is allowed to evaporate gradually, whereby a uniform solid solution film is obtained. Transparent electrodes 4 are provided on the other surface as well of this film 1 and lead wires are mounted to the respective electrodes 4, 5, whereby an element 6 having electrooptic effect is obtained. The element 6 is highly mechanically strong, is easy to manufacture, has excellent Kerr effect and is utilized as an electrooptic modulating element.
