Abstract

PURPOSE: To cake collected ashes while inhibiting the dissolution of amphoteric metals, by mixing incinerator dusts with water, granulating or forming the mixture, and then bringing the granulated or formed mixture into contact with carbonic acid gas to convert alkaline components in the dusts into carbonates.
CONSTITUTION: Incinerator dusts 11, as such or after a hydraulic setting agent 12 is added, are mixed with water 19, and a granulated matter 14 or a formed matter 15 is produced from the mixture. The granulated or formed matter is then brought into contact with carbonic acid gas or gases containing it. The gases containing carbonic acid gas may be combustion exhaust gas from the incinerator containing about 8% carbonic acid gas. By this treatment, alkaline components, e.g., Ca(OH)2, in the incinerator dusts 11 are converted into carbonates, e.g., CaCO3. The calcium carbonate, etc. are formed in the surface layer of the granulated matter 14 or the like. Owing to this reaction, the alkalinity is neutralized so that the dissolution of harmful metals such as amphoteric metals, especially Pb, can be inhibited.
