Abstract
PURPOSE: To lower the velocity of flow of molten metal only near the refractories and prevent the erosion caused by the velocities of flow of the molten metal by applying plural static magnetic fields from the outer side of the refractories to the molten metal.
CONSTITUTION: Molten metal 2 flows in an arrow direction in a runner formed of, for example, circular cylindrical refractories 1 placed in a horizontal direction. If static magnetic fields are applied to the refractories 1 by many electromagnetic coils 3 provided perpendicularly to the outside surface thereof, the parts 2a near the molten metal 2 are attracted by Coulomb force and are decelerated. Since the central parts 2b of the refractories are apart from the near parts 2a, there is virtually no decrease in the velocity of flow. It is equally well to apply static magnetic fields by permanent magnets.
