Abstract

CONSTITUTION: The coloring and decoloring reactions of the oxidation and reduction of a biphenylviologen derivative shown by the formula I (R1 and R2 are H, halogen, 1W20C alkyl, nitro, cyano, alkoxy, e.g., methoxy, ethoxy, butoxy, etc., ester, e.g., aceotoxy, etc., acetyl; X- is monovalent anion, e.g., F-, Cl-, I-, CH3COO-, H2PO4, etc.) are utilized to give the desired display element.
