CONSTITUTION: An electrochromic display material utilizes the oxidative and reductive reactions of an acridine derivative of the formula (where R is 1W20C alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl, alkoxycarbonylalkyl, alkylcarbmoyl, carbamoylalkyl, phenyl, benzyl, or naphthyl group, R1WR9 each is H or an electron-withdrawing substituent, e.g., nitro, cyano, carboxyl, sulfo, halogen, etc., and X- is a monovalent anion, e.g., F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, BF4 -, ClO4 -, CH3COO-, NO3 -, HSO4 -, H2PO4 -, etc.).
