Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A 5-fluorouracil derivative of formula I (R is alkyl or aryl group) or formula II.
EXAMPLE: 1-Methylsulfinylmethyl-5-fluorouracil.
USE: Carcinostatic activities.
PROCESS: A 1-thiomethyl-5-fluorouracil (F), e.g. 1-methylthiomethyl-5-fluorouracil, is oxidized with an oxidizing agent (A), e.g. sodium periodate, in a solvent of preferably water, to give the objective compound of formula I or II. The compound of formula II is also obtained by the action of an oxidizing agent on the compound of formula I. The agent (A) is used in on equimolar amount or slight excess of F at a low temperature of 0W10°C for the compound of formula I, and in a molar amount of twice or more that of F at a higher temperature of 80W110°C for the compound of formula II.
