Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce an ethylene copolymer in good yields, by copolymerizing ethylene with an isoolefin in the presence of a specified catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst is prepared by mixing and contacting 1mol of a vandaium tetrahalide, e.g., VCl4, with 0.1W1,000mol of an organo-aluminum compound of the formula: AlRnH3-n, wherein R is a hydrocarbyl group and 1≤n≤3, at -10°C or below for 1W60min in an inert gas atmosphere. Next, ethylene and isoolefin, e.g., isobutylene, mol ratio 1:99W99:1, are copolymerized at a pressure of atmospheric pressure 100kg/cm2 in the presence of the above-produced catalyst in an inert organic solvent to obtain a high MW copolymer, intrinsic viscosity ≥1.0dl/g.
