Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the titled copolymer having a low heating loss and a high flash point, by copolymerizing in a liquid phase ethylene with a 3C or higher α-olefin in the presence of hydrogen under specified conditions including the use of a catalyst consisting of a soluble V compound and an organic Al compound.
CONSTITUTION: A low-molecular weight copolymer, ethylene content of 30W 90mol%, number-average MW of 300W30,000 is prepared by continuously polymerizing ethylene with a 3C higher α-olefin (e.g., propylene) in the presence of hydrogen in an inert solvent (e.g., butane) with the aid of a catalyst consisting of a soluble V compound of formulaI, where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, X is a halogen and 0≤n≤3, and an organic Al compound of formula II, wherein R1 is R, X1 is X and 1≤m≤3, while feeding the V compound dissolved in an inert solvent in amounts to provide a concentration which is five- times or below that in the polymerization system so as to maintain the V compound concentration in the polymerization system at 0.3W30mmol/l of liquid phase.
