Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain polyethylene having a wide distribution of molecular weight, by the multistage polymerization of ethylene in the presence of a catalyst containing a specific solid product and an organoaluminum compound in combination at a low temperature in a slight amount of a solvent to prepare a low- molecular polymer in the first stage and a high polymer in the second stage.
CONSTITUTION: The polymerization in the first stage is carried out in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (A) a solid product obtained by reacting a trivalent metallic halide, e.g. AlCl3, with a bivalent metallic (hydr)oxide, e.g. Mg(OH)2, and (B) a solid product supporting a transition compound prepared from an electron donative compound, e.g. chain dimethylpolysiloxane, a transition metallic compound of Group IVa or Va, e.g. TiCl4, (C) an organoaluminum compound, e.g. (C2H5)3Al, in combination in a saturated hydrocarbon solvent at 50W120°C and 5W70kg/cm2 at a molar ratio between ethylene (E) in the vapor phase and H2 of 1:(3W7) while feeding 30W90%, based on the total amount of (E) to be fed, (E) thereto. The polymerization in the second stage is subsequently carried out while keeping the molar ratio between (E) and H2 at 1:(0.001W 0.5) and feeding 10W70%, based on the total amount of (E) to be fed, (E) thereto.
