Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce an ethylene copolymer having excellent mechanical properties in high yields, by copolymerizing ethylene with an isoolefin in the presence of a specified catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst is prepared by contacting (A) 0.001W1,000mmol (in terms of transition metal) transition metal compound, e.g., TiCl4, (B) such an amount of an organometallic compound of GroupIWIII of the periodic table, e.g., triethylaluminum, as to provide an atomic ratio of metal in component B to transition metal in component A, of 0.1W2,000 and (C) 0.01W1mol, per mol component B, electron donor containing at least one C-C unsaturatd bond in the molecule, e.g., alkyl alcohol. Next, 1W99mol% ethylene is copolymerized with 99W1mol% issolefin of the formula, CH2=CR1R2, wherein R1 and R2 are each alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl, under a pressure of 1atm.W100kg/cm2 and a temperature of -50W+150°C.
