Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction between polycarbosilane and a specific polyzirconosiloxane gives an organometallic copolymer, which is made into fiber, made infusible and calcined to produce complex carbide fiber with much better physical properties and oxidation resistance than SiC fiber.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A polycarbosilane with a major chain skelton of formulaI and (B) a polyzirconosiloxane with the major chain skelton consisting of zirconoxane of formula II and siloxane of formula III at a ratio of 30/1W1/30 are mixed so that the amount ratio of the mojor chain skeltons of the former to the latter comes in the range 100/1W1/100. The mixture is heated in an organic solvent in an inert atmosphere to give the crosslinked organometallic copolymer. The solution is made into fiber, made infusible and calcined in vacuum or in an atmosphere of an inert gas or a reducing gas at 800W1,800°C.
