Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a roll of superior fracture resistance by constituting a mold for casting the roll by lifting molten metal by the combination of metal molds and sand molds, and causing directional solidification in the axial direction of the roll.
CONSTITUTION: In order to cause directional solidification in the axial direction of a cylindrical roll material 2 from its both ends, metal molds 9 are disposed on the sides A of the respective end faces and sand molds 10 on the sides B of one rolling surface. In this case, it is preferable to set the thickness l' of the molds 9 at l'>l/4 with respect to the length l (=400mm) of the rolling surface of the material 2. If a mold 5 is formed with the sand mold packed part, and molten metal is poured through a runner 7, the casting structure of the material 2 exhibits the macrostructure M extending preferentially slenderly in the axial direction as the A sides are quickly cooled and the B sides are slowly cooled. Hence, heat cracking is difficult to occur in the material 2, and since it goes along the axial direction despite the occurrence, the roll material has superior fracture resistance.
