Abstract

PURPOSE: Coal is depolymerized with heat in a hydrocarbon solvent under pressurized hydrogen to form a depolymerizate of specific properties and the depolymerizate is heat treated to crystallize, melt-spun, made infusible, carbonized and graphitized to produce the titled carbon fiber of hogh performance.
CONSTITUTION: Coal is subjected to thermal depolymerization under pressurized hydrogen in a hydrocarbon solvent and the insoluble residue is removed. Further, the solvent is separated to give a coal depolymerizate of 0.01W0.07 oxygen/carbon atom ratio, more than 0.73 fa (aromatic factor according to the Brown-Ladner method) and less than 1,200 number-average molecular weight. The resultant depolymerizate is heat treated under mild agitation in an inert gas to form a crystalline pitch, melt spun, made infusible by oxidation with air, then carbonized in an inert gas and graphitized. The depolymerizate of such properties is obtained by depolymerization under drastic conditions.
