Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain carbon fiber for a molecular sieve with enhanced power of separating and purifying gas, etc. by melt-spinning specified depolymerized coal, making the fiber infusible activating it, and introducing functional groups having ion exchanging power into the resulting carbon fiber.
CONSTITUTION: Coal is depolymerized in a hydrocarbon solvent under elevated pressure of hydrogen, and the undissolved residue is separated and removed. The solvent is then removed by distillation to prepare depolymerized coal having 160W250°C softening point and ≤0.07 atomic ratio of oxygen/carbon. This coal is melt-spun and made infusible or further carbonized, and the resulting carbon fiber is activated at 650W850°C to obtain carbon fiber for a molecular sieve. After further carbonizing the fiber in an inert atmosphere as required, functional groups having ion exchanging power are introduced into the fiber by wet or dry oxidation or other method. Thus, carbon fiber for a molecular sieve forming no dust during use and having superior mechanical strength, molecular sieving power and treating power is obtd.
