Abstract

PURPOSE: Coal depolymerization product is heat treated, extracted, separated into the solid and the liquid components and the resultant modified depolymerization product is melt spun into fiber, made infusible and carbonized to produce high-grade fiber of high mechanical strength such as strength and elasticity.
CONSTITUTION: Coal is heated in a hydrocarbon solvent under hydrogen pressure to effect solubilization and depolymerization, then undissolved parts are removed. The hydrocarbon solvent is recovered by distillation and the resultant coal depolymerization product is heat treted in an inert gas atmosphere at 400W450°C. Then, it is extracted with a hydrocarbon solvent such as quinoline, the residue is removed, then the solvent is recovered by distillation to prepare the modified coal depolymerization product of 200W300°C softening point and 0.01W0.07 oxygen/carbon atomic ratio. The resultant product is subjected to melt spinning, then made infusible and carbonized at 240W300°C.
