Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain carbon fibers having a high orientation degree and high quality, by melt spinning mesophase pitch of high mesophase content obtained by using mesophase spherules prepared by heat-treating heavy oil as a raw material, making the resultant fibers infusible, and carbonizing the infusible fibers.
CONSTITUTION: A raw material pitch, obtained by heat-treating a heavy oil at 300W500°C, and consisting of mesophase spherules and matrix pitch is then washed with a solvent, e.g. quinoline, capable of dissolving the matrix pitch selectively to a afford mesophase spherules. The resultant mesophase spherules are alone or mixed with pitch and melt spun at 300W400°C, and the resultant fibers are then made infusible and carbonized to give the aimed carbon fibers.
