Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled spherule efficiently with a small amount of a solvent, by separating a meso-carbon spherule formed from a heated pitch from the pitch matrix with a specific separating assistant through the standing separation method.
CONSTITUTION: A pitch is heat-treated at 350W500°C for 0.5W10hr to give a pitch containing 1W25wt% meso-carbon spherules. A separating assistant consisting of 0.3W2.0pts.wt., based on 1pt.wt. pitch, aromatic oil solvent, e.g. anthracene oil or creosote oil, and 0.02W1.0pt.wt., based on 1pt.wt. pitch, petroleum aliphatic oil solvent, e.g. kerosine or light oil, is added to the pitch and mixed under heating at 100W300°C, and then the mixture is allowed to separate at 100W300°C for 0.5W4hr. The supernatant liquid is removed by the decantation method, and the residue is distilled at the boiling point of the solvent or 95vol% running temperature (running point) or below or 350°C or below to give the aimed meso-carbon spherules.
