Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare needle coke capable of forming graphite of low expansion coefficient, by using a raw coal oil which, after removal of quinoline-insolubles (Q.I.), has been heat-treated to have a specific Q.I. value.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of coal tar (pitch), etc. and a solvent (e.g. cyclohexanone or kerosene ) is left to stand and then a clear liquid containing substantially wo Q.I. (the content of Q.I. being about 0.8wt% or less) is formed by separating and removing the settled insoluble matter from the mixture. Subsequently, the clear liquid is heat-treated at about 380W430°C for several hours to about 20hrs to adjust the content of Q.I. at 1.5W25wt%, and the resulting raw coal oil in subjected to delayed coking.
