Abstract

PURPOSE: To make aliphatic hydrocarbon heavy oil (H) into useful materials, e.g. binder, lubricant, and raw materials for gasoline, by heat-treating H in the first stage, and by heat-treating the respective layers, separated from the resulting bottoms through settling.
CONSTITUTION: Aliphatic hydrocarbon heavy oil (H) is heat-treated at 400W480°C for 5W200min to facilitate the separation of layers and not to cause coking. The oil is then separated by settling into layers, preferably the upper and the lower layers (U) and (L) to give a benzene-insoluble content in U of 2wt% or below. The separated layers are heat-treated in the second step at 420W450°C for 60W800min and 420W450°C for 50W120min for U and L, respectively. Uniform decomposition and simple operation provide oils consisting mainly of aliphatic hydrocarbons and pitch of C/H ratio ≥1 with high aromaticity and β-resin content.
