Abstract

PURPOSE: An iron ore is combined with a small amount of specific metal oxide such as MoO3 and by use of the mixture as a catalyst the smooth hydrogenolysis of a coal of low carbonization degree such as brown coal is effected to give the liquefied product.
CONSTITUTION: An iron ore is mixed with at least one of metal oxide selected from MoO3, CoO and NiO, preferably by 1W5wt%, calculated as metal. Using the mixtur as a catalyst in an amount of 0.5W2wt% on the basis of dewatered and non-ash coal, a coal of low carbonization degree such as brown coal is heated in a hydrocarbon solvent such as creosote oil, preferably at 350W500°C to give the liquefied product.
