Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove harmful components and particulate carbon contained in the exhaust gas discharged from a Diesel engine by amethod wherein the end faces of adjacent passages in a honeycomb structure made of a porous material are alternately closed and a ternary catalyst is supported on the wall of each pore passage.
CONSTITUTION: In a honeycomb structure which is made of a gas-permeable porous heat-resistant material and has pore passages as passages for gases, the end faces on one side of every other pore are closed and the end faces on the otherside of the remaining pores are closed. The catalyst for removing CO, HC, NOx is supported on the wall 2 of each pore passage. The exhaust gas discharged from a Diesel engine and introduced in the direction of A1 passes as indicated by A2, then passes through the pore walls 2 while being accompanied by filtration of particulate carbon, and is discharged to A4. Accordingly, the particulate carbon trapped at the pore wall is burned by heating it with the exhaust gas, accompanied by concurrent cleaning of the exhaust gas.
