Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the efficiency and exhaust gas properties of an internal combustion Stirling engine, by causing laminar combustion at the top of a high-temperature chamber which is most distant from a heat regenerator and by providing an oxidizing catalyst in the heat regenerator.
CONSTITUTION: A liner around a high-temperature chamber 6 over a piston 4 is made of ceramic 7. An oxidizing catalyst 20 is embedded in the upper portion of the liner. Fuel from a fuel injection valve 11 undergoes laminar combustion in the chamber 6. When a power piston 5 descends, the combustion gas exerts a force to the piston 5 and passes through a heat regenerator 3 in the displacer piston 4 and thrugh an oxidizing catalyst layer 21 in the regenerator 3 so that heat is accumulated and the combustion gas is purified. The combustion gas is discharged through an exhaust port not shown in the drawing. In the meantime, new air is sucked and then compressed by the ascent of the power piston 5. The air receives heat while passing through the heat regenerator 3. The air thereafter enters into the high-temperature chamber 6. Fuel from the injection valve 11 is burned again. An internal combustion Stirling engine is thus operated.
