Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform proper exhaust gas back flow in accordance with operation condition by a method wherein preparing a variable volume retaining chamber next to the combustion chamber of an engine to retain exhaust gas, and change its volume in accordance with operating condition of the engine.
CONSTITUTION: A suction and exhaust valve 4, 12 and retaining chamber valve 19 are prepared in the combustion chamber, to the upper portion of the piston 3. A retaining chamber 10 is formed to the upper portion of the retaining chamber valve 19, and the volume of the retaining chamber 10 can be converted by a piston 7 which is driven by an actuator 8. A control device 20 is fed with signals from temperature sensor 6, crank angle sensor 15 and fuel injection volume sensor 32 of fuel injection device 31, and opens valve 19 during compression explosion stroke by an actuator 27 and also moves piston 7 up and down in accordance with the load.
