Abstract

PURPOSE: To stabilize an arc and to display its effect sufficiently by selecting the shape and arrangement of magnetic poles of electromagnets when welding the inside surface of a thick pipe by two DC electrodes.
CONSTITUTION: Magnetic poles 4a and 4b of an electromagnet 3 as the 1st electrode are increased in area where a base material 2 faces, and set parallel to the base material 2 at a distance l1 which is short, but causes no trouble in welding operation; and the surface of the electromagnet 3 facing to the base material 2 is put as close to an arc as possible. When the electromagnet 3 is energized with the opposite polarity to that of the base material 2, a line 9 of magnetic force flows and a crossing magnetic field is produced in an edge part 1 to stabilize the arc. The parts of magnetic poles 14a and 14b of an electromagnet 13 as the 2nd electrode facing to the base material 2 is made small in area, and a distance l2 between the magnetic poles 14a and 14b, and the base material 2 is made relatively large. Since a weld bead 10 as the 1st layer is formed in the edge part 1, an arc from the electrode 18 flies near the surface of the base material 2. Consequently, an arc for the welding of the 2nd layer is regulated by a line 19 of magnetic force to be stabilized.
