Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the energy conversion efficiency of a system which drives pistons, turbines or the like making use of a reversible reaction between a metal and hydrogen, by employing two or more metal hydrides having the same equilibrium hydrogen pressure at different temperatures.
CONSTITUTION: In hermetically-sealed reaction chambers R1, R3, R5, are respectively placed three types of metal hydrides MAHX, MBHY, MCHZ which have equiliblium hydrogen pressures PH and PL respectively at temperatures T1 and t1; T2 and t2; and T3 and t3. Here, these temperatures are supposed to satisfy the following inequality: T1>t1≥T2>t2≥T3>t3. On the other hand, dehydrogenated metals MA, MB, MC are placed respectively in hermetically-sealed reaction chambers R2, R4, R6. The hydrogen pressure PH can be developed in each of the reaction chambers R1, R3, R5 by maintaining the metal hydrides MAHX, MBHY, MCHZ respectively at the temperatures T1, T2, T3 with a heating medium. On the other hand, by keeping the temperatures of the dehydrogenated metals MA, MB, MC respectively at the temperatures t1, t2, t3 with a cooling medium, these dehydrogenated metals are enabled to absorb hydrogen whenever the reaction chambers R2, R4, R6 receive a supply of hydrogen and maintain the pressures of these reaction chambers at the hydrogen pressure RL. A mechanical energy generator 4 is driven using the pressure difference (PH-PL).
