Abstract

PURPOSE:To lower breakdown voltage and to obtain secure ignition of high compression and lean gas burning engines by forming space charge zone between electrodes through energizing electrodes with high frequency voltage just before energizing with usual high ignition voltage. CONSTITUTION:Battery 1 is connected to joining point M of primary coils 20a and 20b of ignition coil 20, and ignitors 30 and 31 are connected to other ends of each primary coil. Direction of winding of coils 20a and 20b is such that ignition plugs 8 and 9 generate negative and positive voltages, respectively, when ignitor 30 is off and that ignition plugs 8 and 9 generate positive and negative voltages, respectively, when ignitor 31 is off. When ignitors 30 and 31 are closed and opened in turn via control circuit 40 in response to ignition signals from revolving signal generator 4, and output of high frequency generator 41 generates high frequency voltage within secondary coil 20c before ignition plugs 8 and 9 are energized by high voltage, space charge zone is formed between electrodes of ignition plugs 8 and 9.
