PURPOSE:To realize an independent operation among the normal fast forward, rewind and marking retrieval fast forward, and rewind respectively, by producing a stop command only in the fast forwarding retrieval and rewinding retrieval modes. CONSTITUTION:When a fast forwarding retrieval switch 102 is turned on, the power supply voltage is applied to a fast forward controlling circuit 107 to perform the fast forward. If a detedtion head 100 detects the marking of a tape 4 under such conditions, a detection signal is applied via an amplifier 104 to produce a stop command signal from a retrieval control storing circuit 106 to which the power supply voltage, etc. is applied. The stop command signal is then transmitted to a stop controlling circuit 109. In the same way, the stop command signal is produced from the circuit 106 also when a rewinding retrieval switch 103 is operated. But no stop command signal is produced when a fast forwarding switch 33 or a rewinding switch 34 is operated. Accordingly, the tape does not stop even in the marking detection mode during the normal fast forwarding and rewinding modes which are different from the retrieval mode. Thus an easy-to-handle magnetic recorder and reproducer can be obtained.
