Abstract

PURPOSE: To impart appearances being stable for a long period and very similar to real wood to the Al material, by a grainlike shade of color formed in the coloring of the oxide film of the Al material wherein the dark colored parts of the surface are slightly concaved shallower than the light colored parts.
CONSTITUTION: The Al material comprising Al or an Al alloy is molded into a desired shape to be pretreated. The molded Al material is electrolytically treated using A.C. in an electrolytic liquid that is an aqueous diluted acid solution with an alkaline electrolyte added to it or an aqueous solution having the same effect. As the result of the treatment, a silver-gray colored grain pattern appears on the surface of the Al material along the suspension direction (vertical direction) of the treated body in the electrolytic liquid. Parts of the grain pattern that are traced by bubbles have much more fine pores than other parts of the pattern have and are shallowly concaved. If the Al plate having the grain pattern is electrolyzed using A.C. in an inorganic pigmentation bath containing a metallic salt, a large amount of pigmentation component is deposited onto the concave parts of the grain pattern where the fine pores are densely situated, so that the Al material having a distinct color tone is obtained.
