Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a free cutting steel having further enhanced machinability and improving the life of a tool by combinedly adding Ca and Pb, Ca and Te, or Ca, Pb and Te as elements providing machinability to steel components.
CONSTITUTION: A free cutting steel is obtd. by adding 0.03W0.35% Pb and/or 0.01W0.10% Te to a steel contg. 0.0010W0.0300% Ca as an element providing machinability as well as 0.05W0.80% C, ≤2.0% Si, ≤4.0% Mn, ≤0.1% P, ≤0.6% Cu, ≤5.0% Ni, ≤6.0% Cr, ≤1.0% Mo, ≤1.0% W, ≤0.5% Ti, ≤0.5% V, ≤0.5% Nb and ≤0.01% B as basic components. The resulting composite Ca free cutting steel has further enhanced machinability while almost maintaining the mechanical characteristics, workability, hardenability, wear resistance, weldability, etc. of the base steel.
