Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a urea resin at low energy cost by a simplified production process, by subjecting a hot molten urea obtined in the synthetic process of urea to a resin-forming reaction by mixing it directly with formalin.
CONSTITUTION: In the synthetic process of urea, hot molten urea obtained by reacting ammonia with carbon dioxide gas is degassed and, if necessary, contaminants are removed. Immediately, thereafter, the molten urea is mixed with formalin and subjected to a resin-forming reaction. A temperature drop otherwise resulting during mixing with formalin is controlled. Upon addition of a catalyst, a large quantity of a reaction heat is generated. Accordingly, no heating is required and the desired reaction temperature is attained by cooling not by heating. It is possible to produce a urea resin economically by simplifying the production process and saving the energy required for the resin-forming reaction.
