PURPOSE:To increase the shelf life of a battery by using a gelled zinc electrode obtained by uniformly dispersing amalgamated zinc powder into a gelled electrolyte in an alkaline battery using an alkaline electrolyte such as alkaline manganese battery, a mercury battery, and a silver oxide battery. CONSTITUTION:In a negative active material prepared by mixing amalgamated zinc powder, a gelling agent, and an alkaline electrolyte, sodium salt of carboxymethylcellulose having 1.5-1.8 etherification degree, 130,000-180,000 avarage molecular weight, and 600-800 polymerization degree is used as the gelling agent, and zinc powder is uniformly dispersed into the gelled electrolyte to increase the shelf life. Preferably, the amount of the gelling agent used is 3- 6wt% of the alkaline electrolyte. The etherification degree of sodium carboxymethylcellulose is theoretically permitted to 3.0 from the molecular structure, but limited to 0.5-1.2 from the industrial standpoint.
