Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the characteristic of a high-pressure metal-vapor electric- discharge lamp by making no carbon to remain in an electron discharging matter (an emitter), which is supported by an electrode for the lamp and is applied to the electrode before sintered, by using a substance containing oxygen elements as a binder for the emitter. CONSTITUTION:ThO2 powder used as an emitter is suspended in an aqueous soution of a binder containing oxygen elements, such as polyethylene oxide. Next, an electrode 1 is immersed in thus prepared suspension so as to make the spaces 3 of a coil 2 to be filled with ThO2. After that, the electrode 1 is heated in a stream of nitrogen gas. Even when sintering is thus performed in an inactive gas, the binder almost completely undergoes combustion. As a result, no carbon remains in the electrode 1, and a remarkably improved lamp characteristic can be realized.
