Abstract
PURPOSE:To enhance the durability of a propeller, by a method wherein the part liable to be worn by cavitation erosion is made of a steel containing specified amounts of specified metals and consisting of an epsilon phase or austenite phase. CONSTITUTION:Propeller baldes 1 are provided with a surface layer by padding welding at the parts liable to be worn by cavitation erosion. The material constituting the surface layer contains up to 0.2% of carbon, up to 2% of silicon, up to 2% of molybdenum, 10-20% of chromium, 0.5-10% of nickel, 2-20% of maganese and the remainder of iron, is substantially free from ferrite phase and consists of the epsilon phase or the austenite phase. Accordingly, since the surface layer is made of a stainless steel which contains manganese, ferrite phase is not formed therein and the resistance of the propeller to cavitation erosion is enhanced.
