PURPOSE:To make it unnecessary to search an answer and shorten the time for reject correction, by providing plural code keys and control keys on a keyboard and not only displaying a reject character but also adding read candidate characters to display them when reject occurs. CONSTITUTION:A keyboard 7 of an optical character reader is provided with code keys 0-9 and control keys such as an all character display key S, a carriage return key CR, and a cursor moving key. The character pattern from a preprocessing part 3 is recognized in a character recognizing part 5 by data read out from a dictionary part 4. When reject occurs in this recognizing part 5, this occurrence is reported to a controlling part 10, and a character having the highest probability as the answer for the reject character is supplied to a candidate character storage part 6. The character pattern from the preprocessing part 3 is displayed on a display device 9 by a display controller 8, and a code is added to the candidate character to display the candidate character from the storage part 6 onto the display device 9, and thus, the reject correction from the keyboard 7 is facilitated.
